A butterfly valve is a quarter-turn rotary valve in which a disc rotates 90° around a central shaft to open or close flow. The disc remains in the flow path at all times — making butterfly valves more compact and lighter than gate or globe valves at equivalent bore. This is the preferred choice for large-diameter industrial pipelines across India where space, weight, and cost per bore size are critical.

Seat Material Selection Guide — EPDM vs NBR vs PTFE vs Viton

⚠️ Most common Indian project error: Specifying NBR seat for biocide-treated HVAC cooling water. Chlorine and bromine-based biocides degrade NBR within 6–12 months. Always specify EPDM for HVAC cooling water butterfly valves.
SeatTemp Range✅ Specify For❌ Not For
EPDM−40°C to +120°C✅ HVAC chilled and condenser water, potable water, treated water, biocide-treated cooling tower water, DM water, hot water circuits — standard for all Indian HVAC and water treatment BFV specsMineral oil, petroleum, diesel, hydrocarbon — EPDM swells in hydrocarbons
NBR (Nitrile)−20°C to +80°CRaw water (non-treated), sewage, irrigation canal water, non-treated cooling water without biocide, fuel oil serviceBiocide-treated HVAC water, hot water above 80°C, ozone-treated water
PTFE−10°C to +180°CAggressive chemical, concentrated acid and alkali, high temperature above 120°C, seawater, pharmaceutical processStandard water where EPDM is adequate — PTFE has higher operating torque
Viton (FKM)−15°C to +200°CHydrocarbon service, fuel oil, diesel, crude oil, high-temperature chemical, petroleum refineryHot water and steam — Viton not required for water service

Disc Material Selection — CI Disc vs SS304 vs SS316

DiscCost✅ Specify For❌ Not For
CI DiscLowestRaw water, sewage, slurry, irrigation — non-potable, non-treated, infrequent operation — CI disc corrosion acceptable where water quality and contamination not a concernPotable water, treated HVAC water — CI corrodes and contaminates treated water, fails within 3–5 years
SS304 Disc (CF8)✅ StandardMost common — HVAC treated water, potable water, DM water, mild chemical — 15–20+ year disc life — standard for all Indian HVAC and water treatment BFV BOMsHigh chloride (above 150 ppm), seawater — SS304 pits in aggressive chloride service
SS316 Disc (CF8M)Premium +15–20%✅ Coastal industrial (Mundra, Hazira, Dahej, Vizag, Chennai), seawater cooling, high chloride, offshore — Mo addition resists chloride pittingStandard inland non-chloride HVAC and water supply — unnecessary premium

Wafer Type vs Lug Type — Which to Specify

FeatureWafer TypeLug Type
Body DesignPlain body — clamped between two pipeline flanges using through-boltsThreaded inserts (lugs) cast into body — each flange bolts independently to the valve lugs
Dead-end service❌ Both flanges must always be present✅ Downstream flange can be removed while valve stays bolted to upstream flange
Cost✅ Lower — simpler bodyHigher — threaded lug inserts add cost
Specify when✅ Standard in-line service — correct choice for ~90% of Indian BFV installationsPump discharge, pipeline terminal end, equipment isolation where downstream removal is required

Operator Selection — Lever vs Gear vs Electric vs Pneumatic

OperatorSize Range✅ Specify For
LeverDN50–DN150Frequent manual operation at accessible floor level — fast quarter-turn — 10-position locking for throttle — most economical
Gear (Worm)DN150–DN600Large bore where lever torque too high — self-locking holds partial-open position for throttling — ISO 5211 pad for future actuator upgrade — mandatory from DN200+
Electric ActuatedDN50–DN600BMS / DCS automation — HVAC zone control — ETP/STP automated isolation — 220V AC on/off or modulating — remote operation
PneumaticDN50–DN400Compressed air — fast cycling — fail-safe spring return — process plant ESD interlock service
Chain WheelDN100–DN600Valve at 3–15m elevation — floor-level chain operation — overhead pipeline, elevated pipe rack
Extended StemDN50–DN400Underground buried, valve pit, insulated piping — rigid extension spindle to top key at accessible level
💡 PTFE seat note: Operating torque is 20–40% higher than EPDM at the same size and pressure. If specifying PTFE seat, specify gear operator one size earlier than the EPDM threshold — i.e., from DN125 or DN150 rather than DN200.

Frequently Asked Questions — Butterfly Valve Specification

What is the difference between wafer type and lug type butterfly valve?
A wafer type butterfly valve has a plain body clamped between two pipeline flanges using through-bolts spanning both flanges — both flanges must always be present and the valve cannot be used as a dead-end valve. A lug type butterfly valve has threaded inserts (lugs) cast into the valve body allowing each pipeline flange to bolt independently to the valve. The downstream piping can therefore be unbolted and removed for maintenance while the valve remains securely bolted to the upstream flange. Specify lug type for pump discharge isolation, terminal ends of pipelines, and equipment isolation where downstream removal is required without shutting the entire system. Specify wafer type for all standard in-line service — it is more economical and the correct choice for approximately 90% of Indian butterfly valve installations.
Why is EPDM seat specified for HVAC cooling water butterfly valves instead of NBR?
Indian HVAC cooling water systems use biocide treatment chemicals — typically chlorine or bromine-based — to prevent Legionella growth in cooling towers. NBR (nitrile rubber) degrades in these biocide chemicals within 6–12 months — the biocide attacks NBR polymer chains causing the seat to harden, crack, and fail. EPDM resists chlorine and bromine-based biocides reliably throughout its service life. EPDM also handles the full HVAC temperature range from chilled water at 7°C to hot water circuits at 80°C, while NBR has a lower hot water limit. For all Indian HVAC butterfly valve specifications involving biocide-treated cooling water or hot water circuits, EPDM seat is the mandatory specification.
From what size should I specify gear operated instead of lever for a butterfly valve?
The standard Indian project specification threshold is DN150 (6″) for gear operated. From DN50 to DN125 (2″–5″) lever operated is standard — torque is comfortable for single-person manual operation. At DN150, lever becomes heavy for frequent operation — specify gear if the valve will be operated regularly. From DN200 (8″) and above, gear operated is mandatory — lever torque exceeds comfortable single-person operation. For PTFE seat valves, operating torque is approximately 20–40% higher than EPDM at the same size — specify gear one size earlier than the EPDM threshold.
What is the difference between CI disc and SS304 disc in a CI butterfly valve?
Both use the same Cast Iron body and EPDM/NBR seat — only the disc material differs. A CI disc corrodes in treated HVAC water and potable water — within 3–5 years the corroded disc leaves rust particles contaminating treated water and loses structural integrity causing valve failure. An SS304 disc is corrosion resistant — 15–20+ year service life in treated water — no contamination risk. For HVAC and water treatment butterfly valve BOMs, SS304 disc is the standard specification. CI disc is acceptable only for raw water, sewage, and irrigation where water quality is low and contamination is not a concern.
Does a butterfly valve fit ANSI, DIN, and IS flanges without modification?
Yes. The standard wafer butterfly valve body (ISO 5752 Series 20 face-to-face) has a universal body design that fits between ANSI B16.5 Class 150, DIN PN10, DIN PN16, and IS 1538 flanges of the same nominal bore without any modification. The through-bolt pattern depends on the connecting flanges, not the valve body — no change to the valve is needed when the flange standard changes. This universal fit is one of the main reasons wafer butterfly valves dominate Indian industrial piping.
Do you supply butterfly valves conforming to IS 13095 for government tenders?
Yes. Butterfly valves sourced from Ahmedabad — conform to IS 13095 and API 609. IS 13095 test reports and API 598 hydrostatic test certificates are available for government tender documentation including JICA, World Bank, and state water board funded bulk water supply projects. WhatsApp your project specification and BOM — we confirm the applicable certificate before quotation.
What is the MOQ and how do I order for a project BOM?
MOQ is 10 Nos per size per configuration. For EPC project BOMs — 50–500+ Nos across CI and SS body grades, EPDM and NBR seat, lever and gear operator, wafer and lug, multiple sizes — WhatsApp or email your complete BOM listing each line: size (DN), body, disc, seat, operator, end connection (wafer/lug), pressure (PN10/PN16), and quantity. Consolidated project pricing within 2 hours, formal quotation within 4 hours.
