Mesh / Screen Size Selection Guide

Mesh Size Opening Size (Micron) Particle Size Removed Specify For
20 Mesh 800 micron (0.8 mm) Coarse particles — weld slag, large scale, grit Pump suction lines, large bore cooling water, initial commissioning flush
40 Mesh 400 micron (0.4 mm) Medium particles — pipe scale, rust flakes, sediment Standard — most pipeline service — steam traps, globe valves, gate valves, general process
60 Mesh 250 micron (0.25 mm) Fine particles — fine scale, fine sediment Control valves, pressure reducing valves, steam traps in clean systems
100 Mesh 150 micron (0.15 mm) Very fine particles Flow meters, instruments, precision control valves, spray nozzles — requires frequent cleaning, higher pressure drop

Default if not specified: 40 mesh SS304 screen — correct for the vast majority of Indian plant service. Specify finer mesh only when the downstream equipment requires it and the upstream pipe condition justifies it — finer mesh means faster screen fouling and more frequent cleaning.

Pressure-Temperature Ratings — WCB Flanged

ANSI Class 38°C (100°F) 200°C (400°F) 300°C (570°F) 370°C (700°F) 425°C (800°F)
Class 150 20 bar (285 psi) 17.7 bar 15.1 bar 13.8 bar 12.1 bar
Class 300 51.1 bar (740 psi) 46.6 bar 39.8 bar 36.6 bar 31.6 bar

Source: ASME B16.34 — WCB material group. For steam service above 370°C, verify creep considerations with supplier. Class 150 is sufficient for most Indian process plant steam service (typically 7 to 15 bar). Class 300 is specified for high-pressure steam lines, boiler headers, and thermic fluid systems above 20 bar.

Installation Guide

Y Type Strainer — Horizontal pipeline: Install with screen pocket pointing DOWNWARD (6 o’clock position). This ensures collected debris falls into the screen pocket under gravity and does not re-enter the flow when the screen is removed for cleaning. Never install with screen pocket pointing upward — debris will bypass the screen and fall back into the line when the plug is opened.

Y Type Strainer — Vertical pipeline: Flow must travel downward (top inlet, bottom outlet). Install with screen pocket pointing to the side. Upward vertical flow is not recommended for Y strainers — debris will not settle into the screen pocket.

Blow-off / drain connection: Always install a ½” isolation valve on the blow-off connection. In steam service, this allows periodic blowing down of the screen pocket without removing the strainer from the line. In high-solids service, fit a ½” pressure gauge on the upstream and downstream flanges — rising differential pressure indicates the screen is fouling and requires cleaning.

Orientation marking: Flow direction arrow is cast into the WCB body — always verify flow direction matches installation before bolting up.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is WCB material and why is it used for strainers?

WCB is ASTM A216 Grade WCB cast carbon steel — the most widely used material for industrial valves and strainers in Indian process plants. It handles pressure up to 51 bar (Class 300) and temperature up to 425°C — covering steam, thermic fluid, oil, and general process service. It is more economical than stainless steel and rated for significantly higher pressure and temperature than cast iron.

2. What mesh size should I specify?

40 mesh (400 micron) is the standard for most pipeline service — steam traps, gate valves, globe valves, general process. Use 20 mesh for pump suction and large bore cooling water. Use 60 to 100 mesh for control valves, flow meters, and precision instruments. If in doubt, specify 40 mesh and Krishna Industries will confirm suitability for your application.

3. What is the blow-off connection?

A ½” or ¾” NPT threaded plug or valve at the bottom of the screen pocket. Fit a ½” ball valve on this connection — in steam service it allows periodic blowing down of collected debris without taking the strainer out of service. In high-solids service, pressure gauges upstream and downstream of the strainer indicate screen fouling.

4. Can WCB strainer be used for steam?

Yes — WCB is the standard material for industrial steam strainers in India. Class 150 covers up to 20 bar at 38°C (pressure drops with temperature — see P-T table). For high-pressure steam above 20 bar, specify Class 300. Use SS316 screen for steam service — SS304 is also acceptable for most steam applications.

5. Y type or T type — which to choose?

Y type for ½” to 6″ lines in steam, compressed air, thermic fluid, and instrument protection service — compact, low pressure drop, easy maintenance. T type / basket for 2″ and larger lines with high solids load — larger screen area, less frequent cleaning, better for cooling water and large bore process lines.

6. What is the MOQ?

MOQ is 10 Nos. Bulk project orders for 50 to 500+ Nos handled from stock and with fast procurement. Material test certificates and hydrostatic test certificates on request.

7. What flange standard is used?

ASME B16.5 Raised Face (RF) flanges — standard for Class 150 and Class 300. Flat Face (FF) available on request for compatibility with cast iron flanges. Confirm flange standard and drilling in your RFQ.

8. How often should the screen be cleaned?

Depends on pipeline condition and service. In a new installation, inspect after first 24 to 48 hours of operation — new pipelines contain weld slag and mill scale. In steady-state service, inspect quarterly or when differential pressure across the strainer rises by more than 0.3 to 0.5 bar. Install pressure gauges upstream and downstream for continuous monitoring.
