Specify the SS304 (CF8) wafer check valve or SS316L body when the media itself is corrosive or hygiene-critical — chemicals, pharma, food and beverage, marine or coastal plants, and demineralized water loops. Stainless costs more than MS but resists internal corrosion without coatings. How an MS Wafer Check Valve Works
The MS body wafer check valve operates entirely automatically — no actuator, handwheel, or external signal required:
- Forward flow: Upstream pressure exceeds downstream pressure → spring-loaded disc opens → fluid flows through
- Flow stop / reversal: Upstream pressure drops below downstream → spring closes disc before flow reverses → backflow is prevented
- Water hammer prevention: Spring-assisted fast closure means the disc closes before a significant reverse flow velocity builds up — this eliminates the pressure spike (water hammer) that causes pipeline damage and noise in swing check valves
- Installation: Clamped between two pipe flanges using standard bolts — no special bolting required. Flow direction arrow on valve body must point in the direction of desired forward flow

Installation Guidelines — MS Wafer Check Valve
Correct installation is what protects your pump and pipeline — most wafer check valve failures on site trace back to one of the steps below being skipped:
- Check the flow arrow printed on the valve body before lifting it into position — it must point in the direction of intended forward flow (normally away from the pump, on the discharge side).
- Match the flanges. The valve sits between two standard ANSI, DIN, or IS flanges of the same size and rating as the valve (PN10/PN16 or ANSI 150). Flange faces should be clean and undamaged.
- Fit a full-face flat gasket on both sides of the valve body. The wafer body has no flange drilling of its own — the gaskets seal against the pipe flange faces.
- Align before tightening. Bring the flanges together squarely so the valve body is not cocked or stressed, then hand-tighten all bolts.
- Tighten diagonally in stages (cross-pattern), increasing torque gradually over 2–3 passes so the body seats evenly and the gaskets compress uniformly.
- Mind the orientation. Horizontal pipelines are preferred. Vertical installation is acceptable only with upward (bottom-to-top) flow — never install a wafer check valve in a vertical line with downward flow.
- Avoid severe turbulence at the inlet where practical — where space allows, keep a short straight pipe run between the valve and the nearest pump nozzle, elbow, or reducer.
- Pressure-test the joint at commissioning and re-check bolt tension after the first thermal cycle on steam or hot-water lines.

Maintenance & Troubleshooting — MS Wafer Check Valve
MS wafer check valves are low-maintenance because the disc, spring, and seat are the only moving parts, but a routine check keeps them slam-free and leak-tight:
- Disc chatter or flutter: A rattling or hammering sound during operation usually means flow velocity is too low for the size installed, or the valve is oversized for the duty. Confirm the line flow rate against the valve size — an oversized wafer check valve never fully opens and wears its seat unevenly.
- Leakage past the seat: Backflow or a dripping discharge points to a worn or swollen soft seat. EPDM seats swell in oil service; NBR hardens in hot water. Replace the seat with the correct media-compatible material — see the seat selection table above.
- Sluggish closure: A fatigued or fouled spring closes the disc late and lets reverse flow start. Inspect the spring and disc pin during planned shutdowns and replace the spring if the disc does not snap back freely by hand.
- Body and coating check: On carbon steel bodies, inspect the external coating and internal bore for rust scale during shutdowns, especially on untreated water loops. Re-coat or specify epoxy coating when renewing.
- Keep a spare seat-and-spring kit for critical pump-discharge lines — the soft parts are inexpensive relative to pipeline downtime.
- Re-verify the flow arrow whenever the valve is removed and refitted after maintenance — reversed installation is the single most common field error with wafer check valves.
