⚠️ Eye Bolts Are Safety-Critical Lifting Equipment — Read Before Ordering:
  • Always specify FORGED eye bolts for lifting applications — bent wire or welded eye bolts are NOT rated for lifting — the eye can open under load causing dropped load injury
  • Load de-rating at angle is severe: At 45° angle, WLL drops to only 30% of straight-line rated load. At 46° and above — do not use
  • Use shoulder (collared) type for angled loading — plain shank eye bolt can ONLY take straight-line (axial) pull — shoulder type handles angled pull up to 45°
  • Eye bolt must be fully screwed into base material — thread engagement must equal at least the eye bolt shank diameter. Partial thread engagement is a common cause of eye bolt pull-out
  • Always verify WLL from this page’s load table before use — never assume from visual size alone

An Eye Bolt is a fastener with a circular loop (eye) formed at one end and a threaded shank at the other — used for attaching lifting slings, shackles, wire ropes, and chains to machinery, equipment, dies, and structures for hoisting and rigging. Krishna Industries (KELOR), based in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, supplies forged eye bolts in carbon steel and stainless steel — DIN 580 metric sizes M6 to M36 — plain shank and shoulder (collared) types — zinc plated and hot dip galvanised — GST invoice — MOQ 1000 Nos — Pan India dispatch from Ahmedabad.

Eye Bolt Types — Which to Specify

🔩 Plain Shank Eye Bolt (Standard)

  • Straight shank — no shoulder collar at base
  • ✅ For straight-line (axial) loading only — where the load pull is exactly in line with the eye bolt axis
  • ❌ NOT for angled loading — at any off-axis angle, the shank bends and WLL drops dangerously
  • Most common type — standard stock item
  • DIN 580 standard
  • Sizes: M6 to M36
  • Use: Vertical straight lift from directly above

🔩 Shoulder (Collared) Eye Bolt

  • Machined collar (shoulder) at base of shank bears against mounting surface
  • ✅ Accepts angled loading up to 45° — shoulder takes the bending moment that would bend a plain shank
  • ✅ Mandatory for rigging where load direction is not vertical — horizontal lifts, angle lifts, machinery turning
  • DIN 580 / ISO 3266 standard
  • Sizes: M8 to M36
  • Higher cost than plain shank — justified whenever load angle exceeds 5°

🔩 Forged Steel Eye Bolt

  • Hot forged from C15 / C45 carbon steel bar — eye and shank one continuous piece
  • ✅ Rated for lifting — WLL stamped on shank
  • Maximum strength — forging aligns grain structure through eye
  • Finish: self-coloured / zinc plated / HDG
  • Grade 4.6 / Grade 8.8 available

🔩 Stainless Steel Eye Bolt

  • SS304 (A2) or SS316 (A4) — for corrosive environments
  • ✅ Marine, offshore, coastal, food processing, chemical, pharmaceutical
  • Forged from SS bar — same WLL as equivalent carbon steel size
  • DIN 580 dimensions — M6 to M24 standard
  • No coating required — inherent corrosion resistance

Material Selection Guide

MaterialStandard✅ Specify For❌ Not For
Carbon Steel (Zinc Plated)IS 1367 / C45Standard indoor lifting — machinery, dies, equipment — dry indoor environment — most common and economicalOutdoor, marine, corrosive, food contact — zinc plating insufficient for long-term outdoor exposure
Carbon Steel HDGIS 1367 + ASTM A153✅ Outdoor pipe racks, construction sites, outdoor equipment, coastal industrial — 45–85 micron zinc — long-term corrosion protectionFood contact — zinc contamination risk in food environment
SS304 (A2 — DIN 580-NI)AISI 304 / A2Mildly corrosive outdoor — food processing (non-chloride), general chemical, outdoor marine-adjacentSeawater immersion, high chloride, offshore — specify SS316 for aggressive marine
SS316 (A4)AISI 316 / A4✅ Marine, offshore, seawater, food GMP, pharmaceutical — 2–3% Mo provides chloride pitting resistance — standard for Indian coastal industrial liftingVery high temperature oxidising service above 425°C

DIN 580 Working Load Limit (WLL) Table — M6 to M36

Working Load Limit (WLL) = the maximum load that may be applied to the eye bolt in safe straight-line (axial) lifting. This is different from proof load (2x WLL) and breaking load (4x WLL minimum). Always size to WLL — never proof load or breaking load.

WLL values per DIN 580 for forged carbon steel Grade 4.6. Angle values per DIN 580 angular load de-rating: 15° = 80% WLL, 30° = 65% WLL, 45° = 30% WLL. At 46° and above — not recommended. For SS304/SS316 eye bolts, WLL is equivalent to carbon steel for same thread size. Always use shoulder (collared) type for any angle greater than 5°.

⚠️ Critical — Angular Load Reduction for Eye Bolts

The most common eye bolt accident in Indian industrial lifting: using a plain shank eye bolt at an angle without reducing the load. At 45°, a plain shank M20 eye bolt rated 1,400 kg straight-line becomes rated only 420 kg — a 70% reduction. Loads that appear safe by eye bolt size can be 3–4x above the actual angled WLL.
Load Angle from Vertical% of Straight WLL RemainingSafety Action Required
0° (straight vertical pull)100%✅ Full WLL — standard sizing applies
Up to 5°100%✅ Acceptable — negligible deviation
6° to 15°80%⚠️ Derate — use shoulder eye bolt — load must be ≤80% of straight WLL
16° to 30°65%⚠️ Shoulder type mandatory — load must be ≤65% of straight WLL
31° to 45°30%⛔ Shoulder type only — severely derated — load must be ≤30% of straight WLL — consider alternative rigging
Above 45°0% — Do Not Use⛔ Plain shank eye bolt must not be used for angles above 45° — use alternative rigging hardware (swivel hoist ring or shackle)

Eye Bolt Installation Safety — Critical Requirements

  • Full thread engagement: The threaded shank must be screwed into the base material with full thread engagement — minimum engagement depth equals 1.5× the bolt diameter (e.g., M20 eye bolt requires minimum 30mm thread engagement). Partial engagement dramatically reduces pull-out strength.
  • Shoulder (collared) type must seat flat: The collar must bear fully and evenly on the mounting surface — if the collar does not contact the surface completely, the bolt is not properly installed and must not be loaded.
  • Use a plain washer with locknut: For through-bolt applications, fit a large flat washer under the nut — distributes load over larger area and prevents the nut from pulling through soft material.
  • Align the eye before loading: Orient the eye so the load pulls through the plane of the eye ring — not across it (side loading). Never apply load across the narrow dimension of the eye.
  • Not for shock loading: Eye bolts rated WLL are for static or slowly applied lifting loads — do not use for shock loading, drop-testing, or jerking motions — WLL does not cover dynamic impact loading.
  • Inspect before each use: Check for deformation, corrosion, cracks, or thread damage before use — discard any eye bolt with visible deformation of the eye ring — the eye does not recover its WLL after being bent or deformed.

Frequently Asked Questions — Eye Bolt Selection and Safety

What is the difference between a plain shank eye bolt and a shoulder (collared) eye bolt?
A plain shank eye bolt has a straight cylindrical shank from the thread to the eye — no collar or shoulder at the base. It can only take a straight-line (axial) load in line with the bolt axis. Any off-axis angle bends the shank and dramatically reduces the load capacity — at 45° the load capacity drops to only 30% of the straight-line WLL. A shoulder (collared) eye bolt has a machined circular collar at the base of the shank that bears against the mounting surface. The collar allows the eye bolt to accept angled loads up to 45° safely because the collar takes the bending moment that would otherwise bend the shank. Always specify shoulder type for any application where the load direction may not be exactly vertical — horizontal lifts, angled sling configurations, machinery turning — and use plain shank only where the lift is absolutely vertical and straight.
Why is a forged eye bolt safer than a welded or bent wire eye bolt?
A forged eye bolt is manufactured by hot forging — the eye and shank are formed from one continuous piece of steel bar with no discontinuities. The forging process aligns the grain structure continuously through the eye — the full tensile strength of the material is available throughout the eye under load. A welded eye bolt has a weld joint where the eye ring is attached to the shank. Welds are stress concentration points — weld quality varies — and the heat-affected zone (HAZ) around the weld is typically weaker than the parent material. Bent wire eye bolts are made by bending a wire rod into an eye shape — there is no securing mechanism at the eye joint and the eye can open under load, causing a sudden dropped load without warning. Always specify forged eye bolts for lifting applications — bent wire or welded eye bolts are acceptable only for light-duty securing and tethering applications where the consequence of failure is not a dropped load injury.
What thread engagement depth is required for a safe eye bolt installation?
The minimum thread engagement depth in the base material must equal at least 1.5 times the eye bolt nominal diameter. For an M20 eye bolt, minimum engagement = 30mm. For an M24 eye bolt, minimum engagement = 36mm. Furthermore, the base material must have the same strength as the eye bolt — if the base material is softer (e.g., aluminium or soft steel), the thread in the base material may strip before the eye bolt reaches its WLL. For tapped holes in soft materials, increase thread engagement depth to 2× the bolt diameter. Never install an eye bolt in a blind hole without confirming the hole depth provides full thread engagement — partial engagement creates a pull-out risk at a load fraction below the WLL.
What is the MOQ and can I order mixed sizes?
MOQ is 1000 Nos per thread size per material per finish. For plant MRO maintenance store assortment kits — mixed sizes M8 to M24 — minimum 10 Nos per size — we supply as a single consignment with one GST invoice.
