A stainless steel threaded rod (also called an SS all-thread rod, SS threaded bar, or SS fully threaded stud) is a long cylindrical rod with continuous threading along its entire length — used to connect, support, suspend, or anchor two or more components together using nuts and washers at one or both ends. Unlike a bolt, which has a head, a threaded rod is headless and can be cut to any required length from standard stock lengths.

Krishna Industries (KELOR), based in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, supplies the complete range of stainless steel threaded rods and studs — all grades, all thread forms, all lengths — to construction contractors, EPC firms, piping fabricators, structural engineers, and industrial buyers across India. GST invoice. MOQ 10 rods. Pan India dispatch.

Threaded Rod vs Stud Bolt — Key Differences

These two products are frequently confused and incorrectly interchanged on purchase orders. Understanding the difference prevents costly procurement mistakes.

FeatureThreaded Rod (All-Thread)Stud Bolt
Threading Fully threaded along entire length — continuous thread from end to end Threaded at both ends only — plain (unthreaded) shank in the middle; thread length specified per standard (e.g. ASME B16.5)
Standard Lengths Stock lengths: 1000 mm, 1500 mm, 2000 mm, 3000 mm, 6000 mm (and 3 ft / 6 ft / 12 ft imperial). Cut to length on request. Fixed lengths per flange class and pipe size — e.g. ASME B16.5 Class 150 specifies exact stud bolt length for each flange size from ½” to 24″
Primary Use Construction hanging rods, pipe hangers, anchor rods, channel frame assembly, suspension systems, rod couplers, tie rods — anywhere variable length or field cutting is required Pressure flange assembly per ASME B16.5 / B16.47 / API 6A — each flange size and class has a defined stud bolt length; cannot be cut to length
Nut Position Nut can be placed anywhere along the rod length — maximum installation flexibility Nuts placed at each threaded end only; plain shank provides defined grip length for flange joint preload
Standard DIN 975 / DIN 976 / ISO 4026 / ASTM F1554 ASME B16.5 / B7 / B7M / ASTM A193 / A320
HSN Code 73181500 (threaded rods / bars) 73181500 (stud bolts)
⚠️ Critical for ASME Pressure Flanges: Do not substitute all-thread rod for stud bolts on ASME B16.5 pressure flange assemblies. The plain shank of a stud bolt is load-engineered to provide the correct grip length and preload for the flange joint. All-thread rod substitution changes the joint stiffness, may violate ASME PCC-1 bolt assembly requirements, and can lead to joint leakage. Always specify correct ASME B7 stud bolts for pressure flanges. Threaded rod is the correct product for construction, suspension, and non-pressure structural applications.

Coarse Thread vs Fine Thread — When to Specify Which

Thread pitch selection is the most overlooked specification in threaded rod procurement. Using the wrong pitch results in thread stripping, incorrect engagement, or inability to mate with nuts on site.

Coarse Thread (Standard Metric)

Most Common · DIN 975 / ISO 724
  • Larger thread pitch — e.g. M10 coarse = 1.5mm pitch
  • Faster assembly — fewer turns to install nut over the rod length
  • More resistant to cross-threading — easier to start under site conditions
  • Better for use in softer materials (wood, aluminium inserts)
  • Standard DIN 934 hex nuts are coarse thread — always matches
  • Specify for: construction hangers, pipe supports, channel frame, general structural, concrete anchoring, outdoor civil work

Fine Thread (Metric Fine)

Precision Use · DIN 976 / ISO 724
  • Smaller thread pitch — e.g. M10 fine = 1.25mm or 1.0mm pitch
  • Greater thread engagement area per unit length — higher tensile and shear strength for the same diameter
  • More resistant to self-loosening under vibration — smaller helix angle
  • Allows finer torque control and adjustment
  • Requires matching fine-pitch nuts — standard coarse nuts will not fit
  • Specify for: precision machinery, automotive, instrumentation, adjustable tie rods, vibration-exposed assemblies, tensioning systems

Imperial Thread (UNC / UNF / BSW)

Export & Legacy · ASME / BSW
  • UNC (Unified National Coarse) — most common US/export thread form
  • UNF (Unified National Fine) — finer pitch imperial thread
  • BSW (British Standard Whitworth) — for older plant retrofit and some export markets
  • Range: 1/4″ to 1½” diameter
  • Specify for: US-standard EPC projects, export-destined equipment, legacy plant maintenance, and wherever drawing specifies inch thread

SS Grade Selection Guide — SS304 vs SS316 vs Duplex

GradeDesignationKey Property✅ Specify For❌ Not For
SS304 (A2) AISI 304 / UNS S30400 / DIN 1.4301 18% Cr + 8% Ni — general corrosion resistance Indoor construction hangers, HVAC pipe supports, food processing (non-chloride), pharmaceutical (non-GMP), general engineering, interior structural — most economical SS grade Coastal outdoor, marine environments, seawater, chloride-rich water — SS304 pits above ~150 ppm chloride
SS316 (A4) AISI 316 / UNS S31600 / DIN 1.4401 18% Cr + 10% Ni + 2–3% Mo — chloride pitting resistance Marine & offshore pipe hangers, coastal construction, seawater infrastructure, chemical plant, swimming pool structural, food GMP, pharmaceutical cleanroom Budget indoor applications — SS316 costs 20–30% more than SS304
SS316L AISI 316L / UNS S31603 / DIN 1.4404 Low carbon — improved weld zone corrosion resistance Threaded rods that will be welded into assemblies in corrosive service — pharmaceutical, food GMP, chemical plant Non-welded applications — standard 316 is sufficient and more economical
SS310 AISI 310 / UNS S31000 25% Cr + 20% Ni — high temperature oxidation resistance Furnace hangers, kiln supports, high-temperature structural rods above 600°C — where standard 304/316 would oxidise Standard ambient-temperature applications — significant cost premium
Duplex 2205 UNS S32205 / DIN 1.4462 Dual-phase high strength + chloride pitting resistance Offshore anchor rods, desalination structural ties, seawater infrastructure under high tensile load Standard construction — over-specified; use SS316 unless load AND corrosion requirements demand both simultaneously
Nickel Alloy Monel 400 / Alloy 600 / Alloy 625 Extreme corrosion resistance — seawater, acids, alkalis Seawater submerged anchor rods, chemical process acid plant, offshore platform structural ties in splash zone Standard construction — significant premium; specify only where SS316 proves inadequate

Frequently Asked Questions — Stainless Steel Threaded Rods

What is the difference between a threaded rod and a stud bolt?
A threaded rod (all-thread rod) is fully threaded along its entire length — continuous thread from one end to the other. It is available in standard stock lengths (1000 mm to 6000 mm) and can be cut to any length required on site or at the supplier. It is the correct product for construction pipe hangers, channel frame, ceiling suspension, concrete anchoring, and general structural tie applications. A stud bolt is threaded at both ends only, with a plain (unthreaded) shank in the middle. Stud bolt dimensions are fixed per the applicable standard (e.g. ASME B16.5 for pressure flanges) — the plain shank length is engineered to provide the correct grip length and bolt preload for the specific flange joint. Stud bolts should never be substituted with all-thread rod in ASME pressure flange assemblies as this changes the joint stiffness and preload characteristics required by ASME PCC-1.
What is the difference between coarse and fine thread stainless steel rods?
Coarse thread (standard metric) has a larger pitch — for example, M12 coarse has a 1.75 mm pitch. Coarse thread assembles faster (fewer nut turns per unit length), is more tolerant of site conditions, and mates with standard DIN 934 coarse hex nuts. It is the default specification for construction, pipe hangers, and general structural applications. Fine thread has a smaller pitch — for example, M12 fine has a 1.25 mm pitch. Fine thread provides more thread engagement per unit length (higher load capacity for the same diameter), better vibration resistance, and finer torque adjustment. It requires matching fine-thread nuts — standard coarse DIN 934 nuts will not fit fine-thread rods and must not be forced. Specify fine thread only when drawings or specifications explicitly require it, or for precision machinery and vibration-sensitive assemblies. For all general construction and industrial applications, specify coarse thread.
What is the difference between SS304 and SS316 threaded rods?
SS304 (A2) threaded rods contain 18% chromium and 8% nickel — they provide good general corrosion resistance for indoor, non-chloride applications including HVAC pipe hangers, food processing (non-GMP), pharmaceutical (non-cleanroom), and interior structural. SS316 (A4) threaded rods add 2–3% molybdenum which significantly increases resistance to chloride pitting and crevice corrosion. Specify SS316 for all marine, coastal, seawater, offshore, swimming pool structural, chemical plant, food GMP, and pharmaceutical cleanroom applications. In coastal India (within approximately 5 km of the sea), SS316 is the minimum specification for any outdoor or exposed application — SS304 will develop surface pitting and staining within 1–3 years in high-chloride coastal air, especially in humid monsoon conditions.
Can I get SS threaded rods cut to a specific length?
Yes. Krishna Industries offers a cut-to-length service for all SS threaded rods. Specify the exact length required in mm (minimum 50 mm). Rods are cut from standard stock lengths (1000 mm, 3000 mm, or 6000 mm) and the cut ends are chamfered and deburred to protect threads. Thread protection caps are available on request to prevent thread damage during transport. Cut-to-length orders have a minimum of 50 rods per size per grade. For standard stock length orders, MOQ is 10 rods. WhatsApp the size, grade, exact cut length, and quantity for a confirmed quotation within 2 hours.
What is an A2-70 or A4-80 threaded rod?
A2 and A4 are the ISO 3506 material designations for austenitic stainless steel fasteners. A2 = AISI SS304; A4 = AISI SS316. The number (70 or 80) is the minimum tensile strength in units of 10 MPa. A2-70 means SS304 threaded rod with 700 MPa minimum tensile strength; A4-80 means SS316 with 800 MPa minimum. These are the standard property classes for SS threaded rods in DIN 975 and most industrial specifications. Higher property classes (A2-80, A4-100) are available on request for high-load structural applications requiring greater tensile and proof load. When a drawing or project specification lists “A4-80 threaded rod,” it specifically means SS316 at the 80-grade mechanical properties — do not substitute A2-70 (SS304) as the corrosion resistance requirement is different.
Are metric and imperial threaded rods interchangeable?
No — metric and imperial threaded rods and their matching nuts are not interchangeable, even when the diameters appear similar. For example, M12 (12 mm diameter, 1.75 mm pitch) and 1/2″ UNC (12.7 mm diameter, 1.95 mm pitch) look similar but have different diameters, different thread forms (metric 60° vs Unified 60° at different pitch), and different thread tolerances. Forcing a metric nut onto an imperial rod or vice versa will result in cross-threading, thread damage, or a joint that appears assembled but is not properly engaged and will fail under load. Always confirm the thread system (metric or imperial) from the drawing or existing hardware before ordering. If unsure, bring or send a sample nut for thread verification before placing a cut-to-length order.
What is the maximum length available for SS threaded rods?
Standard stock lengths go up to 6000 mm (6 metres) for metric sizes M6 and above, and 12 feet for imperial sizes 1/4″ and above. Lengths above 6000 mm are not standard stock and require special production — contact us with your diameter, grade, and required length for feasibility and pricing. For lengths between standard stock sizes (e.g. 2500 mm), the rod is cut from the nearest standard stock length (3000 mm) with the balance becoming offcut. For large-quantity cut-to-length orders above 50 rods per size, we can minimise waste by optimising cuts across the stock length. Note that 6 m rods require special freight arrangements — standard courier services do not handle lengths above 3 m; please advise delivery location so we can arrange appropriate transport.
What standards and certificates are available?
Krishna Industries supplies SS threaded rods to DIN 975, DIN 976, ISO 724, ASTM F1554, ASME B18.31.3, IS 1367, and JIS B 1181 standards. Specify the required standard on your purchase order. Mill Test Certificate (MTC) confirming material grade (chemical composition and mechanical properties) and standard conformance is available on request. For government, PSU, or quality-plan-controlled EPC projects requiring third-party inspection, dimensional reports, or hardness test certificates, please advise at time of inquiry so we can arrange accordingly.
