Hardness (Shore A durometer) selection for silicone O-rings is different from NBR or EPDM. Silicone is inherently softer and less resistant to extrusion than other elastomers at the same Shore A value. This means a 70 Shore A silicone O-ring has lower extrusion resistance than a 70 Shore A NBR O-ring. Most food and pharma applications use 50 Shore A for better conformability on sanitary fitting surfaces, but higher pressures require harder compounds.
